What are the three doshas?

Ayurveda describes three doshas, or functional energies, that shape how your body and mind tend to work. Vata (air and space) governs movement, Pitta (fire and water) governs digestion and metabolism, and Kapha (earth and water) governs structure and stability. Everyone has all three. Most people have one or two that are naturally stronger, and that mix is called your constitution.

Prakriti and vikriti: why your result is only a starting point

Your prakriti is the constitution you were born with. Your vikriti is your current state of balance, which shifts with the seasons, your age, stress, sleep and diet. A short quiz can only estimate your general tendencies. In a consultation, an Ayurvedic practitioner looks at both, along with your history and daily routine, before suggesting a diet and lifestyle plan. Here is what an online consultation involves.

Can your dosha change?

Your prakriti stays the same through life, but which dosha is out of balance can change. That is why Ayurvedic advice changes with the seasons. In a long Canadian winter, for example, many people notice more Vata qualities such as dryness, cold and restlessness. See our Ayurvedic winter routine.
